THE NORTHERN ROAD TRIP (12 NIGHT ITINERARY)

Embark on a 12-day exploration of the northern and central section of South Africa – covering an astonishing variety of places and topographies.  Accommodation is in unique community-owned destinations where the local staff offer a fabulous insight for travelers. This itinerary covers a range of safari, cultural and walking activities that will provide a dramatically different South African road trip.

Day 1: Joburg – Nahakwe

OR Tambo to Nahakwe Lodge

Day 2: Elim Art Route ex Nahakwe Lodge

Option a: Visit carvers, beaded embroidery co-op, drum-maker & potters on the Elim Art Route

Option b: Visit Modjadji Cycad Reserve for a walk & visit the traditional home of the Rain Queen

Day 3: Nahakwe Lodge to Awelani Lodge

Visit the Mukumbani tea Plantation en-route (2 hours) with tea ceremony as well as stopping with various crafters en-route

Day 4: Awelani Lodge – Game viewing day in Kruger Park

Activities:  Lunch picnic at Pafuri Picnic Site, Visit Thulamela Ruins, Visit Crooks Corner

Dinner at Awelani in a cave with astronomer for star-gazing and night-sky lore.

Day 5: Awelani Lodge – Cultural Day

Activities: Guided walks to rock art, ancient grain-storage areas with Venda guide; tour of local villages to see clinic, shops, schools, tavern and dinner in a local village with traditional dancing and traditional Venda food

Day 6 – Awelani to Mtomeni via Punda Maria Gate

Activities – Game drive from Pafuri Gate to Punda Maria, drive to Mtomeni, Game drive on arrival at Mtomeni

Day 7: Mtomeni in Letaba Ranch

Activities – Morning and afternoon game drives with short walks

Day 8: Mtomeni to Greenfields Guest House

Drive via Blyde River Canyon for extensive site- seeing options, & spend the night in Pilgrim’s Rest

Day 9: Pilgrim’s Rest to Greenfields Guest House

Explore the village of Pilgrim’s Rest before a late departure Alberton, in the south of Johannesburg for an overnight stop.

Day 10:  Greenfields Guest House – Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge

Drive via Golden Gate National Park and village of Clarens – a quaint artist’s village with a range of shops, galleries and eateries before coming up to Witsieshoek.

Day 11: Amphitheatre Climb via Chain Ladders to the top of Tugela Falls

Option a : Complete a guided walk up the Chain Ladders to the source of the Tugela – full day activity

Option b:  Visit the Vulture Restaurant and photograph the Bearded and Cape Vultures; visit  the Basotho Cultural Village (distance 80kms / 2hrs driving )

Day 12: Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge to Durban
