The TFPD Foundation sources philanthropic funds for specific projects that will positively support the communities in the areas where Transfrontier Parks Destinations manage destinations.

The beneficiary communities are:

‡Khomani San and Mier communities of the Northern Cape who own !Xaus Lodge in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

The Batlokoa Community of Phuthaditjhaba who own Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge in the Maloti Drakensberg Transfrontier Conservation Area

The Shangaan community of Massingir Velho who live in Mozambique’s Parque Nacional do Limpopo, close to Machampane Wilderness Camp

And soon to join, the communities who own the Camps of the African Ivory Route in South Africa’s Limpopo province.

Projects

1. Raise funding on behalf of Communities for the improvement of their Community-owned tourism properties and assets

  • on behalf of the ‡Khomani San and Mier Communities, raise around R2- million for the installation at !Xaus Lodge of a renewable energy system driven by solar power - as opposed to the costly generator that provides inadequate hours of power to the lodge and is environmentally totally inappropriate.
  • on behalf of the Batlokoa community owners of Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge, raise around R20- million to restore the old Backpackers Building and convert it into an income and employment-generating conference and spa facility.

2. Source funding for adult training and development of community members in skills such as hospitality, language (English tuition), computer literacy, guiding (wilderness, birding, canoeing, 4x4 guiding)

  • provide funds for internships and study opportunities. Students would receive a living allowance, as well as suitable work clothing, training bursaries and study materials to become qualified to be employed at a TFPD Lodge, or seek work at any other similar tourism establishment in Southern Africa.  For example, a donation of R75 000 will pay for a 3-year internship and training at a facility like the South African College of Hospitality.

3. Provide funding or leverage support from Lodge visitors, for  community projects that have a social, educational or health impact

  • to support Mozambique’s Massingir Vehlo community to acquire skills and basic items ahead of being moved out of Parque Nacional do Limpopo, into an area south of the Massingir Dam. Donations of any amount can help this community with the difficulties of relocation.
  • Support the Batlokoa Circles of Care, a community-run initiative that provides support for orphans in the community. A recent donation of R70 000 by local business people bought blankets before the winter snows set in.
